Underworld "Born Slippy" (Paul Oakenfold Remix) 13. Richard X Feat. Jarvis Cocker "Into You" Commentary: Hoo boy. "Themed" Sixx Mixxes were a, um, mixxed bag. The earlier Chems episode was an unmitigated disaster, but later "specials" (like a Queens of the Stone Age/Nine Inch Nails edition for their Bay Area show) were actually pretty fun. This falls into the "disaster" camp, with bands playing at what I'm assuming was our just-announced Not So Silent Night show shoehorned in awkwardly. I have no record of the 2003 lineup--did the Black Eyed Peas play our show??--but their track here is just astoundingly awful, that Jane's mix was an already-proven fail, and whatever I'm trying to do with the Chems beat over Rancid is just wrong. Even the timing of my transition from the original of Born Slippy into the new remix is off. One point given for inclusion of the Richard X track. Party Ben Scientific Sixx Mixx Score: 1/10

Hot Hot Heat "Bandages" 16. Prodigy "Smack My Bitch Up" 17. Hives "Hate To Say I Told You So" (Slide Bootleg Mix) Commentary: After a one week break (was it our big summer concert? Who knows) the Sixx Mixx returned, retooled, and more or less in the form it was to continue in until its end. While much of the mixing here is "DJ style" -- without much concern about key and just layering the drum intro over the outro of a song -- the density is starting to get where it should be, with 17 tracks, more or less. A few notable tracks show up, including the Streets (who were starting to become major LIVE 105--and Bay Area--favorites at the time), the first appearance of the toweringly great Adam Freeland mix of "Smells Like Teen Spirit," which went on to become the most played track on the Sixx Mixx, and my ham-fisted attempt to mash it up with Fischerspooner. The segues are still pretty poor -- my time-stretching software was only the basic effect included with Cool Edit which was pretty awful , causing weird audio glitches and not keeping very good time. This was to hamstring the quality of the Sixx Mixxes, in my opinion, until I found 3rd party time-stretching plugins the next year. There are one or two nice moments, like the mix from the Streets into the Beasties, and the mix from "Smack My Bitch Up" into Slide's version of the Hives, plus a bit of foreshadowing to "Boulevard of Broken Songs" with a quick clip of Emimen's Aerosmith sample in "Sing." But overall it's a herky-jerky listen. Party Ben Scientific Sixx Mixx Score: 3/10 2ff7e9595c
